What was once a sail has become more than a bag

Our story
What was once a sail has become more than a bag - it’s a symbol of resilience, renewal, and the enduring spirit of those who chart new courses.
At Crafted Fairly, all our bags are hand-crafted by Adela - a refugee woman who has been provided training, logistical assistance, and design consultation to help her develop the skills necessary to create these beautiful bags. Her commitment and hard work has allowed her to reach a skill level that provides her with a fair wage and the ability to branch out and also create her own designs and products as well.
Behind the Scenes
Our founder, Meghan Ferguson Sauder, was looking for a way to support refugees where she lives on Cape Ann along the North Shore of Boston. When she met Adela and found out that she knew how to sew Meg realized that she could combine her love of sewing and making with her desire to empower others and Crafted Fairly bags was born.
Meg and a couple other women in a group established to support refugees got Adela up and running on the project. Meg sources the sails, cuts the pieces and makes design pairings before sending the parts off to Adela for construction and finishing.
Each bag is meticulously handmade, ensuring uniqueness and craftsmanship that honor the people behind the sails and the sewing machine.
“I like to purchase things that have some story or history behind them - these bags carry way more than just the things I’m bringing with me.”
